The driver who hit six migrant workers with a car Sunday at a bus stop outside a Walmart in North Carolina turned himself in to police, authorities said Monday night.
Around 6 p.m., Daniel Gonzalez and several family members entered the Lincolnton Police Department in Lincolnton, North Carolina, where he was arrested and charged with felony hit and run, police said in a news release.
“The family members advised Mr. Gonzalez had contacted them today and advised he had been in an accident,” police said. “The family members said he told them he was parking at Walmart and hit the gas by accident. The family members said he told them he panicked and left the scene.”
Lincolnton police said Gonzalez has been cooperating with detectives and they have recovered the vehicle involved in the incident. Officers have also notified the victims, police said.
Gonzalez was held on a $50,000 bond.
Lincolnton police release video of incident
In a video released by Lincolnton police, the driver slowly drives near a white bus, turns toward a parking spot and runs over the workers, who are standing on the sidewalk at the bus stop.
The workers were taken to a hospital for various injuries. The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, police said. All victims were treated and released Sunday.
